Wiesław Podobas

Wiesław Podobas (born May 20, 1936 in Warsaw ) is a former Polish cyclist and national champion in cycling .

Athletic career

He started 1955-1970 for the club Legia Warsaw , in which the former Polish champion Józef Kapiak was his coach. He started cycling at the age of 16 and in the first year of his career he became a cross-country champion in Warsaw . In 1955 he finished second in the Tour of Poland at his first start . In 1956 he was Polish champion with Legia in the championship in team time trial , in 1957 and 1959 he was second in this discipline. He contested the domestic tour of Poland ten times. In 1959 he won the tour, winning ahead of Stanislaw Gazda . In 1956 he finished the tour in third place, in all other participations he was always among the top 20 drivers in the final ranking. He drove the International Peace Tour in 1959 (21st place) and 1960 (32nd place). At the UCI Road World Championships he competed in 1958 (eliminated) and 1959 (31st place).

Podobas was a participant in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome . In the road race he was overlooked by the judges and registered as eliminated, but he finished with a large group that was classified in 12th place. In the team time trial, he finished 10th with the Polish four-man.

Professional

He completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic.
