The first men's Olympic road race at the Olympic Games 1896 in Athens took place on 12 April 1896th
Route
The 87 km long route led from Athens to Marathon and back again. The start was on Kifisia Street across from a hospital and the finish was in the Neo Faliro Velodrome . Upon arrival at Marathon, the athletes had to sign a document to prove that they had reached Marathon.
Course of the race
The race started at 12:17 p.m. The Greek Aristidis Konstantinidis led the race from the start and was the first to reach the marathon at 1:15 p.m. The German August Gödrich followed in second place .
On the way back he broke down twice and was overtaken by the British Edward Battel . Konstantinidis borrowed a bike from a spectator standing by the track and continued the race. In the further course of the race Battel fell and came seriously injured at the finish. Due to his fall, the Briton was overtaken by Konstaninidis and Gödrich and thus finished the race in third place.
