The road race of men in the 1948 Olympic Games in London took place on 13 August 1948th
In the road race, a 11.45 kilometer circuit in Windsor Great Park had to be driven 17 times. This resulted in a total distance of 194.6 kilometers. Richmond Park was originally intended to be the venue , but activities at speeds over 20 miles per hour were prohibited there. The race started in heavy rain, which meant that fewer spectators attended the race. The biggest problem with the racetrack was the gravel roads, which caused a total of over 100 punctures.
At the beginning it was difficult to choose a favorite because the Second World War had not allowed any competitions in the previous years. Last year's world champion Harry Snell from Sweden could only take 18th place. In the second lap of the race , three drivers, Nils Johansson from Sweden and Gerrit Voorting and Henk Faanhof from the Netherlands, were able to break away from the main field. In the ninth lap Johansson was overtaken by the chasing group and in lap twelve the gap between the two Dutchmen was closed again. Due to two punctures and a fall, a group of eight drivers managed to break away before the last lap. In the last lap, Frenchman José Beyaert broke out of the leading group on the climb to Breakheart Hill and was able to defend this lead to the finish and thus call himself Olympic champion.
Based on the results of the road race, a team ranking was determined for which medals were also awarded.
