The road race led on a winding course through the hilly landscape of Krylatskoje over 189 km. The course to be driven was considered to be the most difficult in Olympic history, almost half of the drivers who started gave up. The boycott of the Games by the United States also had an impact on this competition, so the big favorite Greg LeMond did not take part in the race. So Sergei Sukhoruchenkow from the host country went into the race as a favorite and he did not disappoint. In the third lap, he pulled away from the main field. However, he was caught again two laps later. 32 kilometers from the finish he pulled away again and was able to secure the Olympic victory with a lead of almost 3 minutes.
