The road race of men in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was held on August 14 of 2004.
Race course
After several attempts to break away repeatedly failed, the Italian Paolo Bettini and Sérgio Paulinho from Portugal finally managed to break away from the main field and so the gold and silver medals were awarded to these two athletes. The favorites fell short of expectations, the world champion Igor Astarloa fell in the first round and the defending champion Jan Ullrich only finished 19th.
Results
The American Tyler Hamilton was subsequently disqualified because of positive doping tests.
