At the Tour de Langkawi , he won the first two stages at the beginning of the season.

After GW1516 was found in the A sample of his urine during two doping controls during this tour , he was temporarily suspended on May 3, 2013 by the Union Cycliste Internationale . In GW1516 is a drug that was originally developed to combat obesity, but was not approved because in clinical trials a high cancer risk showed. The World Anti-Doping Agency had expressly warned against the use of this preparation, to be regarded as gene doping , which is only available on the black market, due to the health hazard in spring 2013. A sanction for this violation is not known.
