Deer Lake is a small town ( town ) in the western part of Newfoundland . It is located on the Trans-Canada Highway north of Corner Brook at the junction to Gros Morne National Park . Named the city after the lake, on whose banks it is and his name was given by the first European settlers living there in large numbers reindeer as Deer designated, the English term for deer . Lake Deer Lake is crossed by the Humber River , which flows from there into the Humber Arm of the Bay of Islands ( Saint Lawrence Gulf ).

The first settlers arrived in the region from Cape Breton Island in 1864 . In 1922, a workers' camp was built on the site of today's town to support the Pulp & Paper Mill located in Corner Brook . In 1925 there was already a train station, churches and a small hospital. 1951 Deer Lake received city status. In 1955, the city's largest employer, the airport, which has a catchment area of ​​around 55,000 people, was built.

Demographics

The 2016 census revealed a population of 5,249 inhabitants for the municipality. In the two previous censuses in 2006 and 2011, the population was 4,827 and 4,995 respectively. The population has therefore increased slightly.
