The Humber River is a river on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
River course
The Humber River drains the 5 m high Deer Lake at its southwest end. It flows 16 km in a south-westerly direction. The community of Steady Brook is located on the left bank of the river at the confluence of the river of the same name . In the lower 4 kilometers, the Humber River turns west-northwest and flows into the Humber Arm , an elongated tributary of the Bay of Islands on the west coast of Newfoundland. The small town of Corner Brook is west of the estuary. The Trans-Canada Highway ( Route 1 ) runs along the river. The Humber River is a popular destination for those seeking relaxation and also a popular salmon river .
Hydrology
The Humber River drains an area of approximately 7,960 km². At the gauge at the Humber Village Bridge, at river kilometer 13, the mean discharge is 260 m³ / s. In May the river carries the largest amount of water with an average of 466 m³ / s. The main source of the Humber River is the Upper Humber River , which flows into the head of Deer Lake.
Wildlife
The salmon stock in the Humber River is considered "not endangered". In addition, the following other fish species in the river system occur: non-anadromous form of Atlantic salmon (Ouananiche), brook trout , lake trout , Arctic Norway , American eel , Fundulus heteroclitus (Mummichog) Fundulus diaphanus (Banded killifish) and three-spined and nine-spined stickleback . Other typical water inhabitants are the Canadian beaver , muskrat and North American otter as well as the American mink .
