The Upper Humber River is a river on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
River course
The Upper Humber River rises 7 km east of Ten Mile Pond in the Long Range Mountains . The source area is at an altitude of approx. 700 m . After 50 km the river turns to the southeast. It passes the Birchy Basin lake . He takes on the Taylors Brook and the Gales Brook from the left and the Adies River from the right. Gradually the Upper Humber River turns to the southwest. Junction Brook joins the river from the left 9.5 km above the confluence with Deer Lake . The Junction Brook forms the natural outlet of Grand Lake . Due to its damming and drainage to the hydropower station at Deer Lake, only a small amount of water flows in Junction Brook. Just before the estuary are the parishes of Reidville on the right bank and Deer Lake on the left bank of the Upper Humber River. The Big Falls rapids are located about 37.5 km above the mouth of the river. These are located in Sir Richard Squires Provincial Park .
Hydrology
The Upper Humber River drains an area of about 22060 km². At the gauge near Reidville, at river kilometer 12, the mean discharge is 79.7 m³ / s. In May the river carries the largest amount of water with an average of 243 m³ / s.
Wildlife
The salmon population in the Humber River system is considered "not endangered". The Little Falls at 30 km and the Big Falls 10 km further upstream are sometimes an obstacle for migratory fish . In addition, the following other fish species in the river system occur: brook trout , lake trout , Arctic Norway , American eel , Fundulus heteroclitus (Mummichog) Fundulus diaphanus (Banded killifish) and three-spined and nine-spined stickleback . Other typical water inhabitants are the Canadian beaver , muskrat and North American otter as well as the American mink .
