The Grand Lake is the largest lake on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador with up to 497 km² .
Reservoir
The original lake was flooded in 1924 after the completion of the Main Dam ( ⊙ ) at Junction Brook , the then natural outflow of the lake to the Upper Humber River . The water level was raised by 11 m and the northern lakes Sandy Lake and Birchy Lake were also flooded. The water level of the lake, which is 86 m high on average , fluctuates between 82.8 m and 87.5 m .
Grand Lake extends for 60 miles in a north-south direction. In the lake is the eighteenth largest inland island in the world, the 178 km² uninhabited Glover Island . The water area covers 365 km². The catchment area of the lake covers 5020 km².
Howley parish is on the north shore of the lake. The Trans-Canada Highway ( Route 1 ) runs along the lakeshore of Sandy Lake and Birchy Lake to the north .
Deer Lake Hydroelectric Power Station
The Deer Lake hydroelectric power station ( ⊙ ) is located on the shores of Deer Lake near the town of Deer Lake . The Grand Lake serves as the water reservoir for the power plant. The water is fed to the pressure pipes of the power plant via the 11 km long Humber Canal . The hydropower plant has been in operation since 1925. It provides electricity for the paper mill at Corner Brook . The operator of the plant is Kruger Energy . Nine turbines together generate up to 129.6 MW . The fall height is 74 m.
