The road race of women in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was held on August 15 of 2004.
Olympic champion was Sara Carrigan from Australia, who was able to pull away from Judith Arndt after 118.8 of 126.4 km and kept the distance to the finish. Judith Arndt crossed the finish line in second place and put her middle finger in the air in protest against the Association of German Cyclists . The reason for this gesture was the non-nomination of the reigning champion Petra Rossner . For her gesture, Arndt was fined 200 Swiss francs by the Union Cycliste Internationale . Bronze went to the Russian Olga Sljussarewa . The top favorite for the Olympic victory Leontien van Moorsel fell at the beginning of the race and could not continue it.
