Gonçalo Amorim

Gonçalo Amorim (born September 30, 1972 in Cartaxo , † May 1, 2012 in Santarém ) was a Portuguese cyclist .

Amorim was particularly successful as a sprinter in road races . In 1993, 1997 and 2004 he won the points classification in the Algarve Tour . At the Tour of Portugal in 2002, he secured the jersey of the best in points. He took part in the Vuelta a España twice: in 1995 he did not finish the race, in 2003 he reached 39th place. At the 2001 road world championships in Lisbon, he was 36th, two years later at the world championships in Hamilton 44th. In 2004 he took part in the Olympic Playing in Athens in the street race, but did not finish.

After retiring from active competition, he was sports director of cycling team of Benfica . His main job was as an event manager for the Centro Nacional de Exposições (CNEMA), where he was responsible for the music program of the Feira Nacional de Agricultura and the Festibike cycling event. He was also involved in local politics in the Partido Social Democrata .

On the evening of May 1, 2012, Amorim was found dead in his home in Santarém. He apparently committed suicide with a shotgun.
