The bird sanctuary Satchinez ( Romanian Rezervaţia Ornitologica Satchinez or Mlaştinile Satchinez , popularly Kneeser Ried , also Banat Delta or Kneeser marshes ) is a bird sanctuary in western Romania , along the Jer , on the site of the community Satchinez , in Timiş County , in the Banat .

location

The Satchinez bird reserve, between the villages of Satchinez and Biled , on the Timișoara - Sânnicolau Mare road , extends over an area of 122 hectares in the area of the municipality of Satchinez, 25 kilometers northeast of Timișoara. There is also a further 1,070 hectares of buffer zone.

description

The reserve was established in 1942 on the initiative of ornithologist Dionisie Linția . 40% of Romania's total bird life can be found in the Satchinez Reserve. The Satchinez Marshes are home to a valuable ornithological reserve . More than 100 species of birds , most of them protected at European level, 93 species of aquatic plants and 875 species of insects are at home here.

The Satchinez bird sanctuary has been part of the LIFE (EU) program since 1999 and was funded by the European Union with 127,000 euros for the conservation of the swamps. In 2002 the European Commission approved further grants for the restoration and management of the Satchinez Marshes wetland as part of the LIFE-Nature funding program .

The area along the Jer consists of ponds and bogs , reed- covered islands and peninsulas , swamps with cattails , willow bushes , poplars , acacias and damp meadows . The biotope landscape of the reserve is a paradise for water birds, which find sufficient food here and find ideal breeding conditions in the dense reeds as well as in the thicket of bank vegetation and alluvial forests . It is also called the "Delta des Banats" because the extensive swampy landscape with the wide belts of reeds and rushes as well as the extensive ponds and pools create the impression of a small delta.

Bird reserve

In the Satchinez bird reserve there are protected water birds and many migratory birds that rest here on their transit. The bird sanctuary is of tremendous value for the flora and fauna in this area as well as for migrating birds and it is a special attraction of its kind.
