The Dendrological Park Bazoș (colloquially: Basoscher Wald , Romanian: Parcul dendrologic Bazoș ) is a nature reserve of the IUCN category IV ( forest protection ) on the area of the village Bazoșu Nou , in Timiș County , Banat , Romania .

history

The Bazoș Dendrological Park is an arboretum created by Count Ambrózy between 1909 and 1914. Ambrózy, who was the Austro-Hungarian ambassador to the United States at the time, had access to the Harvard University arboretum , from where he brought mainly North American and Asian tree species. The park now extends over a 60 hectare nature reserve and is home to over 800 groups of plants from five continents. You will find tulip trees , magnolias and many conifer species that are little known in Europe, as well as an oak that is around 500 years old .

The park was laid out under the guidance of the then director of the Düsseldorf Botanical Garden , the landscape gardener Franz von Engerhord.

After the First World War and the collapse of Austria-Hungary , two thirds of the Banat fell to Romania as a result of the Treaty of Trianon . Due to the agrarian reform of 1921, Count Ambrózy's estate was expropriated and nationalized. At that time there were 194 tree and shrub species in the park. From 1937 the dendrological park was gradually expanded, today 1100 taxa can be found in the park.

The 60 hectare park are divided as follows:

  • Oak forest - 36 ha
  • American park with North American tree species - 1.5 ha
  • Asiapark with Asian species - 1.0 ha
  • Landscape park with species of different origins - 11.5 ha

The park is a popular destination, with up to 4,000 visitors on Sundays.
