history

Triplex Confinium

The border triangle Romania-Serbia-Hungary or the Banat is a historical region that developed its territorial cohesion during the period of the Habsburg Monarchy . The colonization of different ethnic-religious groups as part of the spatial planning measures of the Viennese court in the 19th century gave rise to the multi-ethnic character. The pattern of coexistence based on solidarity and the strong commitment to Western European values have shaped regional awareness across national borders. The historical region was divided by the Yugoslav-Romanian-Hungarian border with the Treaty of Trianon in 1920 . Relations between states froze and all infrastructure facilities were broken.

Already during the revolution of Timişoara in 1989 there were first considerations about the establishment of cross-border cooperation between civil organizations (NGO) and regional administrative units , which in the course of the 1990s first led to bilateral agreements between the various regions and finally to the establishment of the DKMT in 1997 . The charter was signed on November 21, 1997 in Szeged. The foundation ceremony is celebrated annually on the last weekend in May at the Triplex Confinium . The Triplex Confinium is an obelisk that is located at the border point of the border triangle Romania-Hungary-Serbia. With this opportunity the general assembly meets and the borders are temporarily opened. In 2005, the Euroregion DKMT became a member of the Working Group on European Border Regions (AEBR).

aims

The aim of the Euroregion DKMT is to develop and implement cross-border economic, cultural and tourism projects as well as joint sporting events. However, one of the most important goals of the DKMT Euroregion is to restore and expand traffic routes and infrastructure. There are currently 316 kilometers of motorway in the entire region. The Timișoara – Kikinda – Szeged railway is to be put back into operation with priority in order to restore the former Paris – Budapest – Szeged – Timișoara – Bucureşti – Istanbul transport network . Making the Bega Canal navigable and expanding the airports in Arad , Szeged , Timișoara , Novi Sad and Belgrade are also milestones in the development of the DKMT Euroregion. Part of the financial resources are provided by the European Union , the rest of the money must be borne by the countries themselves. The expansion of the tolerant coexistence of different languages, cultures and mentalities, which is already present due to the ethnic mix, is also to be promoted towards an understanding togetherness.

Working groups

The implementation of the goals of the Euroregion DKMT takes place through the activity of several working groups , which work out proposals, present projects and implement them. Some of these working groups are:
