The reservoir Surduc ( Romanian Lacul de acumulare Surduc ) was created in 1972 in the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains , Timiș County , Banat , Romania to secure drinking water and protect against flooding in the region around Timișoara . The lake has been a nature and landscape protection area of IUCN Category IV since 2000 .

Geographical location

The Surduc reservoir is located in Timiș County, in western Romania, in the southeast of the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains , just under 100 kilometers from Timișoara and 30 kilometers from Lugoj , on the DJ 681A county road (Drum județean) , about ten kilometers southeast of Traian Vuia .

Work on the dam began in 1972, and water accumulation was released in 1976. As early as 1977, 25 million cubic meters of water had accumulated in the basin. In a second accumulation stage, which began in 1981, 51 million cubic meters of water accumulated in the lake. The reservoir Surduc extends over an area of ​​460 hectares. The lake secures the drinking water for the area around Timișoara and protects it from flooding.

The Surduc reservoir was declared a nature reserve of national importance by law number 5 of March 6, 2000.

Tourist attraction

The reservoir Surduc is a popular destination in the west of the country and is often used for weekend trips, primarily as a bathing lake in summer. The bathing season is already considered to have opened on May 1st. But also anglers and windsurfers get their money's worth here, as well as hunters . A boat - and tent rental is also available.
