The road race of men in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo was held on October 23, 1964th
The venue was the 24.354-kilometer Hachiōji circuit in the city of Hachiōji , which had to be driven eight times. This resulted in a total length of 194.832 kilometers. The start was in front of Takao train station , from where there were short and steep climbs of 65 meters in altitude for the first 11 kilometers of the race. Then it went downhill again, before another ascent had to be overcome at the end. The not too difficult course, as well as the rainy weather, caused a slower pace and thus the field of participants remained together.
There were a few attempts to break away, but they failed. For example, the Belgian Eddy Merckx tried to pull away 1.5 kilometers from the finish , but only managed to pull out a distance of about 20 meters before he was overtaken by the peloton again. In the final sprint, the Italian Mario Zanin prevailed ahead of Kjell Rodian from Denmark and Walter Godefroot from Belgium.
