The road race of the men at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles took place on 29 July 1984th

The circuit of the race was in Mission Viejo in Orange County , it had to be driven 12 times and was 190.2 km long.

Due to the boycott of the Soviet Union, the GDR and Poland, the Americans, also because of the home advantage, were traded as favorites before the race. The best sprinter of the Americans was Davis Phinney , but since the course was hilly, he could only achieve fifth place. His compatriot Alexi Grewal and the Canadian Steve Bauer broke away from the peloton on the penultimate lap and were always able to keep the two pursuers out of Norway, although they never had a big lead. In the final sprint for the Olympic victory, Grewal then prevailed against Bauer by less than a wheel length, although Bauer was considered a better sprinter. Bronze went to the Norwegian Dag Otto Lauritzen .

Grewal had been suspended by the National Cycling Federation 10 days before the start of the Olympic Games because of a positive test for phenylethylamine and had been removed from the Olympic team. However, Grewal's appeal against the suspension was successful because it was found that he had been taking albuterol for asthma and the tests at the time were not mature enough to tell the difference between the two drugs. So he could start.
