Per Werner Pedersen (born March 30, 1969 in Aalborg ) is a former Danish football player , official and commentator. He began his career in 1981 and had to end it prematurely in the summer of 2001 due to a serious knee injury.

Club career

At the age of twelve, Pedersen moved with his family from Kolding to Odense , where he began his career in the youth of Odense BK in 1981 .

From 1987 he made his first appearances in the professional team of Odense, before he advanced to the discovery of the season in 1988 with seven goals in eleven games of the season. Variable in the offensive outer positions, as well as in the storm center, he had established himself as a striker alongside Jess Thorup and Lars Elstrup in the offensive game of his team and was considered the upcoming national player for OBK . The first setback in his career followed in 1989. Although he celebrated his first championship title with the team, he only made three league appearances with one goal of the season due to an injury. After recovering from an injury, he was able to build on earlier performances and moved to the financially better off reigning cup winner Lyngby BK at the end of the season .

At Lyngby, he was considered the preferred player of the Swedish coach Kent Karlsson , who was dependent on fast and strong strikers due to a defensive orientation in midfield with the top performers Morten Wieghorst and Peter Nielsen . In conjunction with the newly signed talent Torben Frank , he then formed an offensive duo, which shone with templates for Flemming Christensen , as well as through its own goal threat. Lyngby made it to the title candidate and was runner-up at the end of the season with two points behind Brøndby IF . After Henrik Larsen returned from Italy on loan for the following season, the team presented itself even better and celebrated the second championship title in the club's history. At the same time, Pedersen advanced to national team for the first time, but missed the leap into Denmark's final squad for the 1992 European Football Championship .

After winning the title at the Euro, in addition to successful coach Karlsson, all national players, except for Claus Christiansen , left the club, whereupon the championship team almost completely broke up and the club slipped back into midfield. In the following years, Niclas Jensen and Thomas Rytter, two of their own talents, made the breakthrough in the professional business, but the quality of the squad had lost offensively. Pedersen lacked an adequate offensive partner due to Frank's departure to France to Olympique Lyon , which he only got back when he signed Miklos Molnar for the 1993/94 season . In addition, other minor injuries followed, which meant that he did not regain his strength until the end of 1994.

In the 1995/96 season he finally moved back to Odense BK, which was in the meantime managed by Viggo Jensen . A team axis was formed around the driver and team captain Brian Steen Nielsen , with defense chief Michael Schjønberg , director Morten Bisgaard and Pedersen in the role of an offensive spearhead. After a short start-up period, Pedersen developed into one of the best strikers in his country in his new role and became a national player again after 1991. Previously known for his playing skills, he was the first to shine as a goalscorer over a longer period of time, thanks to Bisgaard. In 1996, with 16 goals this season, he was still second in the list of goalscorers behind Thomas Thoringer, but in the first half of the 1996/97 season he scored 11 goals in the first 17 appearances, making him the top scorer in the Superliga. On August 17, 1996, he then moved to the Premier League for the then league record transfer fee of £ 2.5 million to the Blackburn Rovers .

Last year Blackburn went into the season without an adequate replacement after the sale of Alan Shearer to Newcastle United , whereby Pedersen advanced to the emergency replacement of the successful coach Ray Harford . After the club had slipped to the bottom of the table in late October, Harford resigned and was replaced by Tony Parkes . He relied on a static storm duo with Kevin Gallacher and Chris Sutton , whereby Pedersen fell behind, only made eleven league appearances with one goal and was considered a bad buy at the end of the season due to the high transfer fee and his well-paid contract.

In October 1997, he was in a row in the orbit of the transfer of Martin Dahlin to Blackburn, in return for a year on loan with option to buy for Germany at Borussia Moenchengladbach on loan. In Mönchengladbach, too, he remained below expectations in a row, once again only scoring one goal of the season in 14 league appearances and was sent back to Blackburn after narrowly relegation with 15th place in the table.

Despite the two weak seasons, the French first division team Racing Strasbourg signed him for a transfer fee of around 7.5 million francs . As the third Dane next to Denni Conteh and Peter Frank Andersen in the Strasbourg squad, he should play a major role in the Alsatian offensive game , which failed again. In addition to a serious knee injury, due to which he had to pause almost the entire season due to injury, there were also differences of opinion with coach Claude Le Roy regarding his playing position, whereupon he was sold back to his home club Odense BK after only six months for a fraction of his transfer fee.

Back in Denmark, he came in the 1999/2000 season due to injury on only one season before he came out of convalescence on November 6, 2000 after 15 months . This was followed by ten season appearances as a wild card , in which he was able to build on his old achievements again before his old knee injury became acute again and he had to end his career for good.

National team

After he made his debut in the Danish U-19 national team on October 1, 1985 at the age of 16 in a 6: 4 home win in a friendly against Austria, it took until April 26, 1988 for him to play again, again in a friendly Austria was allowed to play its second international game for Denmark .

After strong performances at club level for Lyngby BK , he celebrated his senior national team debut on June 12, 1991 during the 2-0 defeat in the friendly against Italy .

In 1996 he caused an international sensation with the winning goal in the 1-0 win against France . Shortly afterwards he moved to England to join Blackburn.

He made his last international appearance for Denmark on June 8, 1997 in the 2-0 win in World Cup qualification against Bosnia-Herzegovina . After that, due to performance, he was not called up until the end of his career.

After the active career

After the end of his career, he switched to the functionary level and worked, among other things, as a manager of Odense BK and Aarhus GF . Since 2007 he has been head of marketing at the Danish handball club Horsens HK .

He also works as a co-commentator for the Danish television channel TV 2 .
