The road race of the men at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was held on 31 July 1996th
For the first time, the top professionals were also allowed, which meant that the distance of the route was extended. Each nation was allowed to provide up to five athletes, which meant more collaboration within the nation. A total of 183 athletes from 57 countries started, 116 of them finished the race. Originally, two drivers from Eritrea, which had gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, wanted to take part, but the IOC did not allow this because Eritrea could not show at least five national sports associations.
The Swiss Pascal Richard won the final sprint for gold against Rolf Sørensen from Denmark. Bronze was won by Maximilian Sciandri from Great Britain.
