Zbigniew Spruch (born December 13, 1965 in Kożuchów , Poland ) is one of the best-known Polish cyclists who made a name for himself especially in the spring classics.

Career

Spruch began his sporting career in the 1980s with the Trasa Zielona Góra cycling club . He later moved to the LZS Warsaw association . He took part in numerous amateur races and quickly caught the eye of the cycling experts. In his amateur career, trained by one of Poland's most famous bike trainers and youth promoters, Kazimierz Prokopyszyn, he achieved 120 successes. Including: two stage victories in the Peace Tour (the Tour de France des Ostens ) and four day victories in the Lower Saxony Tour .

At the beginning of the 1990s, in 1992, Spruch signed his first professional contract with the Italian team Lampre , for which he competed for ten more years, apart from two brief interludes at Panaria and Mapei . Three years later he celebrated overall victory in the Tour of Poland ( Tour de Pologne ). He took part in the Tour de France three times, but without being able to set an example.

Spruch fought twice as captain in the jersey of the Polish national team at the Olympic Games : in 1996 he finished ninth in Atlanta (USA), four years later he was twentieth in the road race in Sydney .

Spruch came in third at Paris-Tours (1994). He jumped onto the podium once at Milan-San Remo (3/1999). The 1999 season was his most successful ever. Spruch, although he couldn't win a race, established himself in the professional scene by 1999 at the latest: second place on a stage of the Tirreno – Adriatico long-distance journey , second place behind Tom Steels in the semi-classic Gent – ​​Wevelgem and also a second place a day segment at Giro della Provincia di Lucca spoke for themselves. A great success was the 2nd place in the Vuelta Espana.

In 2000 Spruch was runner-up in the road race at the World Cycling Championships in Plouay, France . He was only subject to the Latvians Romans Vainšteins .

After cycling

After Spruch ended his career in 2003, he occasionally worked as a cycling commentator for Polish television. He still runs a bicycle shop in Zielona Góra ( Poland ) to this day. He was the Polish national coach, in 2006 he joined the sporting management of the CCC Polsat team and in 2009 he was committed to founding the Italian-Polish Continental team Team Corratec .
