Daniel Wilhelmus Maria "Danny" Nelissen (born November 10, 1970 in Sittard ) is a former Dutch cyclist , road world champion and sports commentator.

family

Danny Nelissen's great-grandfather , Johannes Boesten, was already a cyclist; In 1895, at the age of 13, he was at the inauguration of the Maastrichtsche Wielerbaan in the Maastricht district of Amby. Seven years later he got a job as a porter for the railway. In 1902 Boesten witnessed a sprint match between the US former world champion in sprinting, Major Taylor , and the Dutchman Harrie Meyers , an experience that went down in family history.

Johannes Boesten's daughter met amateur cyclist Willem Nelissen on the Maastricht cycling track. The couple had four children, including Danny Nellisen's father, Ger, and Jean , who became a well-known sports journalist. Danny Nelissen's cousin was married to racing cyclist Ad Wijnands .

Athletic career

Danny Nelissen started cycling in Geleen at the age of ten . In the youth class, where girls and boys still race against each other, Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel was his greatest competitor.

From 1990 to 1994 Danny Nelissen drove as a professional. In 1997 he won the Grand Prix de Wallonie . Then he was diagnosed with a heart defect and had himself reamateurised. 1995 Danny Nelissen won the title of world road champion of amateurs in Colombia (the competition was held in 1995 for the last time). In the same year he won the Olympia's Tour ; In 1996 he took part in the road race at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . He was then taken on again as a professional, with the Rabobank team under Jan Raas . He took part in the Tour de France three times - in 1993, 1996 and 1997 . In 1996 he wore the polka dot jersey for three stages ; In 1997 he gave up. Because of his heart problems, he had to give up his bike for good in early 1999.

Danny Nelissen stated in January 2013 that he had been administered the doping agent EPO for the 1996 and 1997 Tour de France by Rabobank team doctor Geert Leinders .

Miscellaneous

Today Danny Nelissen is Production Manager at Eurosport and was a commentator for this station until he confessed to doping. He graduated from the Johan Cruyff Institute for Sport Studies in Amsterdam .

In the year of his World Cup victory, Danny Nelissen was named " Sportsman of the Year " in the Netherlands.
