Jack Hoobin

John "Jack" Hoobin (born June 23, 1927 in Dagenham , United Kingdom , † June 10, 2000 in Sydney ) was an Australian cyclist .

In 1948 Jack Hoobin started in two disciplines at the Olympic Games in London . In the individual road race , he finished seventh, in the team pursuit on the track he could not place with his team. In the team classification of the road race, his team did not make it into the classification.

In 1950 Hoobin was in Great Britain . Three weeks before the start of the road world championships in Moorslede , Belgium , he traveled to Belgium , where he primarily contested the typical Belgian criteria. His training partner, six-day rider Alfred Strom , advised him to compete in the road world championships, and he had the Australian federation report him. He won the road race and became the amateur world champion . This made him the first Australian to become world champion in road cycling .

In 2017 Jack Hoobin was inducted into the Cycling Australia Hall of Fame .
