Alfred Strom

Alfred Strom (born July 9, 1916 in Sydney , † March 18, 1973 in Bruges ) was an Australian cyclist .

Alfred Strom won four national cycling titles as an amateur . Then he and his friend, Reginald Arnold , who was eight years his junior , decided to go to Europe to compete in six days as a professional .

Strom became one of the most successful six-day drivers of the 1950s. Until 1957 he started in a total of 49 six-day races in Europe and the USA , of which he won nine, including twice the Berlin six-day race , together with Arnold. Later Strom and Arnold fell out and continued with other partners, Strom u. a. with Ludwig Hörmann and Sydney Patterson .

After the end of his sporting career, Alfred Strom stayed in Belgium because he was married to a Belgian woman. He found work with a shipping company. He died in 1973 of poisoning from a gas leak in his home in Knokke .
