Jean Nelissen (born June 2, 1936 in Geleen , † September 1, 2010 in Maastricht ) was a Dutch sports journalist .

Jean Nelissen was head of sport at the daily De Limburger for many years until he retired . “De Neel”, his nickname, became known to the general public in the Netherlands primarily as a television commentator for the NOS for the “ Tour de France ”, together with his colleague Mart Smeets . In his television column “De Avondetappe” he reported on historical events in cycling. Nelissen (who called himself "the Dutch Watterott ") was famous for his encyclopedic knowledge of cycling history. In 2007 Nelissen gave up his activities on television.

Nelissen, who was known for his whiskey and cigar consumption , wrote 26 books, including De bijbel van de Tour de France , in which you can look up all the results of the tour. He was also involved in the drafting of Reglementair uit het wiel rijden (racing regulations for cycling). Most recently he worked as a freelance journalist for De Limburger and the monthly magazine Wieler Revue . He was the uncle of former racing driver Danny Nelissen .

Jean Nelissen was also the namesake (one of two of the same name) for the everyone's race “Jean Nelissen Classic” ( Vianden - Kautenbach -Vianden), which has been organized by the “Driebergse Tourclub” since 2002. In July 2015 the book Jean by the author Bart Jungmann was published. On April 15, 2016, two days before the Amstel Gold Race , a monument in honor of Nelissen was unveiled on the Gulperberg .
