Martinus Jan (Mart) Smeets (born January 11, 1947 in Arnhem ) is a Dutch radio and TV presenter , sports journalist and commentator for the Dutch public television NOS .

Mart Smeets moved with his parents at the age of six from Arnhem, the city of his birth, to Amsterdam , where he obtained his HBS degree. In his youth he tried a few sports and got stuck with basketball . For ten years he (1.94 meters tall) was a professional basketball player at Levi's Flamingo's Haarlem. He played six international matches for the Dutch national basketball team, but in 1972, when it came to the Olympic qualification, he was no longer nominated for this.

After an accident, Smeets ended his sports career and entered the service of the Haarlem Dagblads , later writing for De Tijd , the Haagse Post and de Volkskrant as a freelancer . By De Tijd , he was sent to Munich from there on the Olympic bombing at the Olympic Games to report on 5 September 1,972th So he came into contact with Bob Spaak , a person in charge of the NOS, where he worked from 1973 as a reporter and later as a presenter of the program Studio Sport . He specialized in reporting on speed skating and cycling and reported on various competitions. This is how he came to the Tour de France , as a reporter / commentator and presenter of the De Avondetappe program, which was broadcast late at night .

On December 3, 2008, the jury of the Dutch Beeld en Geluid Awards presented the Gold Award to Mart Smeets. He also got a place on the glass Wall of Fame in the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid in Hilversum . The jury, headed by Peter Römer , called Smeets an "icon of Dutch sports journalism".

In 2012 he withdrew his book De Lance Factor (2011) from the list of nominees of the NS Publieksprijs after the report of the United States Anti-Doping Agency became known, which convicted the American Lance Armstrong of doping. According to his own statement, he would not have received the award that might have been awarded: "" I wrote this book three years ago out of my reality. The truth has now overtaken my reality. "In response to this, Gepakt appeared in May 2013 on cycling and his self- view as a sports journalist after Armstrong was convicted . After the NOS announced that it would no longer use him after the 2012 Olympics , Smeets left as a basketball commentator to the Dutch pay channel Sport1.
