history

In 1334, some members of the Begarden from Cologne, a Catholic religious order for lay brothers in nursing , founded a branch on a property directly outside the city wall of Aachen near the Scherptor gate at that time , from which the Aachen Alexian Order developed in 1477. Like the religious order in Cologne, he was exclusively responsible for the care of sick and handicapped people and, after the plague receded and after the end of the Thirty Years' War, took on new tasks with the care of mentally ill people from around the middle of the 17th century, which led to the emergence the first mental hospital led.

Inpatient accommodation and treatment initially took place in the expanded premises of the monastery and these could be expanded in 1888 with the new "Quirinus Building" on the south side of the main building and in 1896 with the addition of another hospital wing. In addition, other buildings in the area were acquired for hospital operations, such as the Moirke community center, which was used as a production hall by the neighboring Nellessen cloth factory until the 1920s . In addition, rooms and houses in the Aachen area have recently been added, in which social stations and residential complexes for mentally disabled people have been set up.
