The Franziskushospital Aachen is a hospital of the RWTH Aachen University in Aachen . Today it has 160 beds and around 300 employees.
history
In July 1901, some Aachen doctors suggested that the Order of the Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family , which had been based in Eupen since 1842, acquire Villa Giani , built in 1878/79 on Moreller Weg near Lütticher Straße , and convert it into a hospital. However, since the order did not have the necessary funds, 10 doctors founded the "Aachener Sanatoriumsgesellschaft" and acquired the house with the 12,000 m² property from the community of heirs represented by Leonhard Giani . The sisters, who had agreed to take care of the sick, only had to take care of all the movables.
In 1903 the house was extended to the west - apparently by the architect of the original building, Hermann Joseph Hürth . In 1925 there was another extension with a nurses' home with a chapel in the back garden. A third large expansion with a modern ward block took place in 1968 in order to meet modern requirements. The old buildings were also rebuilt in such a way that their historical character was partly lost.
In 2008/9 the nursing wing was thoroughly modernized and expanded with an extension for the center for outpatient surgery.
Since January 1st, 2020, the Franziskushospital has been taken over by the Aachen University Hospital and from now on operates under the name of "Uniklinik RWTH Aachen - Franziskus". This was accompanied by massive restructuring of the departments and sections as well as the deregistration from emergency medicine.
