history

founding

On January 3, 1814, a foundation for a hospital in Eschweiler was established. When Pastor Anton Ackermann died on April 24, 1840, he left his fortune to the church master Peter Stassen with the condition that he set up a hospital, whereupon in 1846 the so-called Kappertz'sche Haus in today's "Dürener Straße" was acquired. After some renovations and repairs, the first sick and poor were admitted in 1850 and on February 19, 1853 the hospital license was granted by the Royal Ministry of Spiritual, Educational and Medical Affairs . On April 1, 1854, hospital work began in Kappertz's house.

The decision to build a new hospital and the establishment of a hospital building association "under the protection of St. Joseph" followed in 1856, and the plan for a new building on "Poststrasse" (today's "Jülicher Strasse") with a neo-Gothic facade was drawn up the following year. However, on August 2, 1858, the now restored Eschweiler Castle was bought up because it was seen as cheaper. In the first few decades, Anton Ackermann's successor, Dean Matthias Deckers , had a decisive influence.

Expansion and world wars

Isolation ward (1937-2005)

The following years were characterized by extensions and renovations: 1886 connection to the public water supply, 1889 approval of an extension by the Archdiocese of Cologne , 1892 inauguration of the extension of a closed wing and the new chapel , 1907 connection to the new municipal sewerage system and, for this reason, the renovation according to regulations the toilets, 1910 installation of an electric passenger elevator and a low-pressure steam heating , 1914 extension of the military medical department on the occasion of the construction of a barracks in Eschweiler, 1922 expansion considerations, which initially failed due to financial problems due to inflation, and renovation of a tower in the ring wall, 1928 increase of the "girls' house" "from 1870 to one floor with space for 50" girls ", 1931 first mobile X-ray machine and hall for lung patients, 1934 construction of a floor on the historic" Kaffeemöll "tower for sewing and other ancillary rooms as well as the first loudspeaker system for the sick, 1937 new construction of one Isolation house with 100 beds in three wards for the reception of influenza and diphtheria infected patients from the entire district (it was demolished in August 2005; see photo). The number of beds rose parallel to the expansion: in 1890 there were around 80, in 1911 110, in 1935 220 and in 1939 340 beds.

On August 4, 1943, an air raid shelter was built, which served as a chapel room from September 17, 1944. In the same September there was severe destruction and the relocation of 206 patients. 25 nuns remained, and one projectile hit the hospital chapel. US troops confiscated the hospital on December 3, 1944 and set up a US military hospital . From December 1944 to February 1945 all doors, beds and other furniture were thrown out of the windows, smashed and driven to Hohenstein on orders . Recommissioning and makeshift renovations took place immediately after the end of the war on May 9, 1945, and at the end of 1945 the hospital had 263 beds, and in 1949 it again had 360 beds.

post war period

On April 1, 1948, a state-approved nursing school was established. A new two-storey ambulance building with an access ramp was built in 1955, but these extensions were soon no longer sufficient, which is why those responsible planned a completely new building on Jülicherstraße. Since the hospital was to remain in the same location in the center of the city center, it was decided to demolish Eschweiler Castle , the city's landmark. After the chapel, rector's house and girls' dormitory were demolished in 1962, the ambulance building was demolished in 1976. The landmark itself, the so-called "Kaffemöll", fell victim to the wrecking ball in mid-1967. The commissioning of the new hospital with 460 beds and the move in of the first 200 patients after four years of construction at a cost of around 23.1 million DM took place in May 1967, and on January 21, 1970 the main entrance from "Englerthstrasse" to "Dechant- Deckers-Strasse "relocated. In 1975 a staff dormitory was built with an exercise pool and day-care center .

Academic teaching hospital and time after 1977

The appointment to the Academic Teaching Hospital of the RWTH Aachen on October 1, 1977 marked another chapter.

The years that followed were also characterized by extensions and renovations: 1977 completion of the first phase of the extension with nuclear medicine, chapel, priestly apartment and operating room unit, 1978 acquisition and commissioning of the first IT system, 1979 opening of the hospital as a health center, 1982 construction a training center for nursing professions to obtain specialist care and completion of the second construction phase of the extension building with a thyroid therapy unit, dialysis center as well as doctor and function rooms .

Oncological focus and time after 1986

In 1986 the first computer tomograph was purchased. In the same year the friends' association "Regionaler Onkological Focus Eschweiler eV" was founded, and in 1987 the "Eschweiler Hospital Supply and Plant Operation GmbH". In 1995 the bed wing renovation began, in 1997 the garden pavilion was handed over, mainly for patients with cancer, and in 1998 the new main staircase and the redesign of the entrance area with relocation of the reception and commissioning of the first mammotome in the Rhineland to set up a breast center. From 1998 to 2003, the ward block was renovated, including wet rooms , including the balconies.

On March 31, 1990, the Sisters of the Poor were adopted by St. Francis .

Euregio Breast Center and the period after 2000

The newly built Akzente restaurant opened in 2000, and in 2001 the Euregio Breast Center was established. In 2002 the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the expansion and expansion of the treatment wing, including two OR centers. The celebration of the 150th anniversary took place on February 19, 2003.

On July 1, 2005 the separation of "general, thoracic and minimally invasive surgery" (chief physician Hans-Wolfgang Menges) and the "vascular surgery clinic" was completed; the latter becomes an independent specialist department - the first and only in the Aachen district at that time , with chief physician Rudolf Müller (previously Luisenhospital Aachen ) and 20 beds.

A two-day-old baby and its mother were taken hostage in the maternity ward on March 13, 2006; a special unit ended it after almost seven hours without bloodshed.

On September 12, 2014, work began on building the basic structure for a helipad mounted on the roof and on the building.

On October 1, 2016, despite major protests in the workforce, population and politics, the successful obstetrics was closed in order to support the Bethlehem health center in the neighboring town of Stolberg. The project operates under the name RegioNetzwerk für die Frau .
