Leonhard Giani

Leonhard "Leo" Giani (born August 30, 1865 in Mainz , † February 9, 1933 in Aachen ) was a German local politician .

Life

He was the fourth child of the merchant Caspar Giani and grew up in a wealthy Catholic family in Aachen. There he attended the former cathedral school and then the secondary school, which he left in 1882 with a secondary school leaving certificate . He then completed a commercial apprenticeship in his father's wholesale and retail business, did internships abroad in Belgium and England and first became an authorized signatory , then a partner in his father's company. In 1890 he married Johanna Faymonville, daughter of a brewery owner, with whom he had three children.

After his parents 'death in 1895, he initially continued the business and arranged for his siblings to have their parents' house, the Villa Giani on Moreller Weg, built by the architect Hermann Joseph Hürth ( pictured there), sold to a medical association in order to found a hospital . He contributed significantly to the foundation of the Aachen Franciscan Hospital, which has since been sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family .

In 1909 he handed over management to his younger brother Josef Giani in order to fully serve the community. He became an alderman of the city of Aachen and took care of the poor administration and the welfare of the recruits .

He and his wife Johanna were particularly committed to the organization of the German Catholic Day in Aachen in 1912. For his services as chairman of the finance commission, Pope Pius X made him a knight of the Order of St. Gregory . His wife received the cross " Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice " in gold.

Leo Giani found his final resting place on Westfriedhof II in Aachen.

The SPD politician Paul Leo Giani is his grandson.
