Genova Piazza Principe train station
The Genova Piazza Principe railway station is one of the two main stations of the Italian port city of Genoa . It is located in the northwest area of the city center, between Piazza Acquaverde , where the passenger entrances are, and Piazza del Principe . The station building occupies the entire northern section of Via Andrea Doria ; the service access is located here. The imposing Palazzo del Principe is just a short distance away . The second main train station in the Ligurian capital is Genova Brignole .
Occasionally the inscription Genova P. Principe is incorrectly identified with Genova "Porta" Principe ( porta translates as door or gate). In fact, there was a city gate at the Piazza del Principe , the remains of which can be seen at the entrance to the Principe underground station .
history
The station was built in 1860 under the direction of the architect Alessandro Mazzucchetti . The original building consisted of a steel vault that spanned a hall between the side buildings.
In order to cope with the increasing rail traffic, the station building was extended in 1900 by the engineer Giacomo Radini Tedeschi.
Today the station has several levels:
- Great Plain: completely underground; Location of the technical facilities and storage rooms of the Ferrovie dello Stato and two railway tracks ( Principe Sotterranea stop )
- Mezzanine level: lower than the ground floor; Location of the platforms and the track system, as well as smaller shops and snack bars
- Ground floor: entrance hall with various Trenitalia shops and service facilities
- Upper floors: offices of the Ferrovie dello Stato
The station has been included in the quality improvement program of the Grandi Stazioni organization of Ferrovie dello Stato . The exit of the Principe Sotterranea stop is a few meters away from the Principe metro station of the Metropolitana di Genova and the Stazione Marittima , the ferry port .
