The Genova Brignole train station , together with the Genova Piazza Principe train station, is one of two main train stations in the Italian regional capital, Genoa . It is located in Piazza Verdi in the city center.

history

At the world exhibition planned for 1905 , the idea arose to build a second main train station in Genoa, construction of which began in 1902 under the supervision of the engineer Giovanni Ottino. The station building was to be aligned with a central symmetry axis over a length of 105 meters from three structures . Construction was completed in 1905.

The Genova Brignole station has been included in the upgrading program of the major Italian stations, which is carried out by the Grandi Stazioni organization under the direction of Ferrovie dello Stato .

The station received a subway connection on December 22, 2012 with the completion of a metro station .

architecture

The architecture of the station building is shaped by the romantic motifs of the Renaissance of the French School , surrounded by rich decorative motifs. The pilaster strips , the door pillars and the frames are made of white granite up to the first floor . The facade to the Piazza Verdi is in Roman style and decorated with stucco work and stone from the caves of Montorfano . The interior rooms are decorated with frescoes by De Servi , Berroggio and Grife . On the facade of the central body of the main building there is a large sculpture with the coat of arms of Genoa, which, surrounded by two griffins, represents a white shield with a red cross over which the Janus head crown stands. The coats of arms of Rome and Turin can be seen next to the clock below.

The station building has several floors:

  • Basement: this is where the central heating system, various storage rooms and the cellar rooms of the restaurants and living rooms are located
  • Ground floor: here is the main room with the ticket offices, various small shops and the offices of the Ferrovie dello Stato
  • Mezzanine floor: this is where the platforms of the various tracks, small snack bars, the waiting rooms and offices of the railway employees are located
  • Upper floor: with offices and apartments
