Willy Vanden Berghen (born July 3, 1939 in Vilvoorde ) is a former Belgian cyclist .
He won the amateur 1958, the overall at the Tour Flèche du Sud in Luxembourg , 1959, the Belgian championships in the individual pursuit on the track and the one-day race Schaal Sels Merksem and 1960, the twelfth stage of the Peace Race . In the same year he also took third place in the overall ranking of the International Peace Ride and in the individual road race at the road cycling world championships at the Sachsenring in the German Democratic Republic and at the Summer Olympics in Rome . In the world championship race, he tactically relied on staying on Gustav-Adolf Schur's rear wheel and was surprised by Bernhard Eckstein's attack , which he did not pursue. He later enjoyed a long friendship with Schur.
After moving to the pros he achieved four victories in individual races in 1961 and 1962, including 1962 for the Mercier-BP-Hutchinson team in a criterion of the Paris-Nice race and in the fourth stage of the Tour de France , and in 1963 two victories. After the 1966 season, he ended his active career.
