    Remarks

    1. a b The party to which the senators last belonged is given.
    2. a b Québec is the only province with Senate divisions that are prescribed by the constitution. In all other provinces, a division is merely an optional designation that the senator can choose himself and that has no constitutional or legal significance. A senator who does not elect a particular Senate division is considered to represent the province as a whole.
    3. Senators are appointed by the Governor General on the proposal of the Prime Minister.
    4. Senators must resign after the age of 75.
    5. Senators are appointed by the Governor General on the proposal of the Prime Minister. When the Senate was founded in 1867, the appointment was made directly by Queen Victoria by means of a royal proclamation.
    6. Anne Cools was expelled from the Conservative group in 2007 because she opposed Prime Minister Stephen Harper and rejected the budget. She had switched from the Liberals to the Conservatives three years earlier. She later joined the Independent Senators Group.
