John James Greene PC DFC QC (born June 24, 1920 in Toronto , Ontario , † October 23, 1978 ) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was a member of the lower house and a member of the Senate for more than 15 years Minister was.

Life

After attending school, Greene completed a law degree . During the Second World War he did his military service in the Royal Canadian Air Force between 1941 and 1945 and was last promoted to captain ( flight lieutenant ). Because of his military merits and his bravery, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and mentioned by name ( mentioned in dispatches ). After the end of the war he took up a position as a lawyer in Arnprior .

In the general election of April 8, 1963 , he was elected as a candidate of the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the House of Commons and represented in this the constituency of Renfrew South and most recently since the general election of June 25, 1968 to September 1, 1972 the constituency of Niagara Falls . At the beginning of his parliamentary activities he was from February 18, 1964 to April 3, 1965 co-chair of the Joint Special Committee of the Canadian Parliament on Consumer Credit and Cost of Living.

On December 18, 1965, Greene was appointed Minister of Agriculture to Canada's 19th Cabinet by Prime Minister Lester Pearson .

On April 6, 1968, he applied for the successor to Lester Pearson as chairman of the Liberal Party, but in the first ballot, with 169 delegate votes, he only took sixth place in the nine-member field. In the second ballot, he finished fifth among the six remaining candidates with 104 votes. After he was last of the five candidates in the third ballot with 29 votes, he decided not to run again. Ultimately, the previous Justice Minister Pierre Trudeau prevailed in the fourth ballot and was elected chairman of the Liberal Party with 50.9 percent.

Greene also held the office of Minister of Agriculture from April 20 to July 5, 1968 in the 20th government of Canada formed by Pearson's successor, Pierre Trudeau . After a cabinet reshuffle, he became Minister for Energy, Mining and Resources on July 6, 1968, before resigning from this ministerial office on January 27, 1972 for health reasons.

On September 1, 1972, he became a member of the Senate on the proposal of Prime Minister Trudeau and represented the Senate District of Niagara there until his death on October 23, 1978 .
