List of Canadian Senators from Québec

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Canadian Senators from Québec shows all past and current members of the Canadian Senate from the province of Québec . The province is represented by 24 senators.

Québec is the only province in which the seats are assigned to special Senate divisions. The 24 divisions are prescribed by the Constitutional Act of 1867 , and their boundaries are set out in the Consolidated Statutes of Canada of 1859. The boundaries of the divisions were set in such a way that the English-speaking minority was adequately represented. Since then, however, they have never been changed, which is why large areas in the north that used to belong to the Northwest Territories are actually not represented at all. Since a senator does not necessarily have to live in the division he represents, the division today has a purely formal character; however, he must have a piece of land worth $ 4,000 there (this value has never been changed either). See also Senate Divisions .

Citing Article 26 of the Constitution, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney appointed two additional senators per senatorial region in 1980. In addition to Québec, these are the regions of Western Canada , Ontario and Maritime Provinces . This regulation has only been used once to date. The two additional senators from Québec were not bound by the given division.
