Robert Borden
Sir Robert Laird Borden (born June 26, 1854 in Grand-Pré in Nova Scotia , † June 10, 1937 in Ottawa ), GCMG PC KC , was a Canadian lawyer, politician and between 1911 and 1920 the eighth Prime Minister of Canada . Borden was a member of the Conservative Party of Canada , of which he was chairman from 1901 to 1920.
Borden supported Great Britain in World War I by sending massive troops to Europe on the Western Front . After the end of the war he played a decisive role in transforming the colonial British Empire into a partnership of equal states, the Commonwealth of Nations . Through clever negotiations, Borden succeeded in allowing Canada to take part in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 and to become an independent member of the newly founded League of Nations .
Borden was Crown Attorney (KC) and member of the Canadian Privy Council (PC). In 1915 he was made Knight of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG).
