Azellus Denis

Azellus Denis PC QC (born March 26, 1907 in Saint-Norbert , Québec ; † September 4, 1991 ) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was a member of the lower house and a member of the Senate as well as a minister for almost 56 years .

Life

After attending school, Denis completed a degree from which he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed another law degree at the University of Montreal with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and then took up a position as a lawyer. In the meantime he did his military service 2nd Reserve Battalion of the Châteauguay Regiment.

In the general election of October 14, 1935 , he was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the lower house, where he represented the constituency of Saint-Denis until his resignation on February 3, 1964 . On April 22, 1963 Denis was appointed by Prime Minister Lester Pearson as Postmaster General in the 19th Canadian Cabinet and was a member of this until his resignation on February 2, 1964.

After leaving government and the House of Commons on February 3, 1964, he became a member of the Senate at the suggestion of Prime Minister Pearson. Since his appointment took place before the British North America Act of 1965 came into force , the automatic constitutional maximum age of 75 years did not apply, so that he remained a member of the Senate until his death on September 4, 1991, where he represented the La Salle Senate district .

At the time of his death, he was a member of the Canadian Parliament for almost 56 years .

His older brother Joseph-Arthur Denis was also a member of parliament and also represented the constituency of Saint-Denis in the lower house from 1922 until his death .
