Philip Deignan, also Pilib Ó Duígeannáin (Gaelic) (born September 7, 1983 in Letterkenny , County Donegal ) is a former Irish cyclist .

Career

Philip Deignan initially drove for the then Professional Continental Team Ag2r Prévoyance from 2005 and won the Tour du Doubs one-day race there in his first season . With this team he took part in the Vuelta a España 2007 - his first Grand Tour - where he finished 71st overall. In 2008, Deignan competed for Ireland in the Beijing Summer Olympics and competed in and finished 80 in road race .

Deignan drove to the Cervélo TestTeam in 2009 and 2010 . For his new team he won the 18th stage of the Vuelta a España 2009 in Ávila in a two-man sprint ahead of Roman Kreuziger , with whom he was able to break away from a 16-man breakaway group on the last descent. At the end of the tour, he finished ninth in the overall classification, just under eleven minutes behind Alejandro Valverde .

After a year with Team RadioShack , he joined the United Healthcare Professional Cycling Team in 2012, for which he won the overall ranking of the US Tour of the Gila stage race in 2013 . In 2014 he switched to Team Sky , where he was considered a reliable helper and ended his active career after the 2018 season.

Private

In mid-September 2016, Philip Deignan married his racing driver colleague Lizzie Armitstead . Since the marriage, the 2009 world champion has started under her married name. Philip Deignan has been active as a trainer for Lizzie Deignan since the birth of their daughter in September 2018 and his subsequent resignation and looks after their daughter.
