Pete Rock & CL Smooth were an American hip hop duo from Mount Vernon , New York . It consisted of the DJ , producer and rapper Pete Rock and the rapper CL Smooth (actually Corey Brent Penn). From 1991 to 1995 the duo were under contract together with Elektra Records . They were known for the jazzy samples of rock and the smooth flow of Penn.

history

The duo's music career began in 1991 with the EP All Souled Out . This was successful enough to convince the Elektra Records label to finance the recordings for their debut album Mecca & Soul Brother . Mecca & Soul Brother , published in 1992, is now considered a jazz rap classic . In 1994 Pete Rock & CL Smooth released their second album The Main Ingredient . Like Mecca & Soul Brother , it was received positively by the hip-hop scene as well as by critics, but it still failed to achieve high sales.

In 1995 the duo separated. While Pete Rock, who is considered one of the best hip-hop producers due to his outstanding production on the duo's three releases, continued to work for other artists (including Gang Starr , A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots ), CL Smooth pulled out back to the music business.

In 1998 Pete Rock released his first solo album Soul Survivor for which he was able to win many well-known rappers for guest appearances. In addition to songs with Raekwon , Ghostface , Method Man and Big Pun , CL Smooth with Da Two was also featured on the album. After CL Smooth could also be heard on other Pete Rock productions, rumors of a reunion of the duo emerged, which were further fueled by a joint tour. Both artists denied a common comeback in several interviews . In 2013 they went on a reunion tour together.

In 2006, CL Smooth released his first long player since 1994 with The Main Ingredient with his solo album American Me .
