Golden Age (Hip-Hop)
The term Golden Age of Hip-Hop ( golden age of hip-hop) refers to a period in the history of hip-hop music, which by critics and fans as the ideal is considered the genre.
This period is not defined uniformly. It usually falls into one of the following categories:
- the entire 1980s
- then to the old school of hip-hop ( between 1985/86 and 1992/93 ): This phase is heralded by the commercial breakthrough of hip-hop through Run-DMC and contains a number of publications that are now considered classics . Mostly, it is emphasized by the establishment of various subgenres such as pop rap ( LL Cool J , DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince ), hardcore and gangsta rap ( Schoolly D , NWA , Kool G Rap ), political rap ( Public Enemy , BDP ) and even Nu Metal (Run-DMC, Beastie Boys ) innovative character of this section as well as its musical influence .
- 1993 and 94 : They are sometimes seen as the "rebirth" and "new era" of hip-hop. In the two years the debut albums, mostly described as classics, were released by the Wu-Tang Clan , Snoop Dogg , Nas , The Notorious BIG , Warren G , OutKast and Jeru The Damaja, among others . The genre of alternative hip-hop , represented by A Tribe Called Quest , De La Soul (both part of the influential Native Tongues Posse ), Arrested Development and Common , experienced a high phase of fame and popularity.
For the most part, the end of Golden Age hip-hop coincides with the popularization of gangsta rap, primarily by Dr. Dre , in the 1990s . Different periods in this decade are nevertheless often referred to as the "Second Golden Age", including the years 93 and 94, which is why the definitions of the golden age of hip-hop, which differ over time, do not have to be mutually exclusive.
