Little Brother was an American hip hop group from Durham , North Carolina .

Career

The group's three founding members were rappers Phonté (Phonte Coleman) and rappers Big Pooh (Thomas Jones) and producer 9th Wonder (Patrick Douthit), all of whom were former students at North Carolina Central University . In terms of content and music, the group was largely based on the style of Native Tongues , A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul as well as Pete Rock & CL Smooth , which were particularly successful in the mid-1990s. Their name was derived from that when they considered themselves "little brothers" of these musicians.

They are also founding members of the Justus League , a collective of independent hip-hop musicians from North Carolina.

They made their debut in August 2001 with the single Speed . This work tells of success in the music business while you still have to go through problems in normal life. In 2003 they were discovered by the ABB Records label and got a record deal, so that on March 18 of the same year their first album The Listening was released. This helped Little Brother to a higher level of awareness due to very good reviews. While this album was a broadcast on a fictional radio station, played on September 13, 2005, the following album The Minstrel Show , this time on the major label Atlantic Records , in a fictional television program. It describes, among other things, the problem of changing character in the event of media success. Before that, the mixtape The Chittlin Circuit 1.5 was released in June 2005 , which was intended as a small gap filler, but enjoyed extreme popularity among fans.

After their separation from the major label Atlantic Records due to the economic failure, Little Brother kept their fans happy with mixtapes, and And Justus for All was even available for free.

In early 2007 Phonte and rapper Big Pooh announced that 9th Wonder was no longer part of Little Brother. The group still exists in the form of the two MCs. Phonte cited the differing views on the goals of Little Brother as reasons for the separation. With its rise to the top league of hip-hop producers, 9th Wonder is more interested in promoting its instrumentals than identifying itself as a full member of a group.

The album Getback , which was released in late 2007, received mostly positive reviews despite the almost complete absence of 9th Wonder (he produced a song). The work was produced by Illmind, Mr. Porter, Khrysis, Hi-Tek and Nottz, among others . As a kind of defiant reaction because of the repeated postponement of the release date by ABB Records, Phonte put the album as a free download on Okayplayer.com.

In summer 2008 Little Brother released their fourth studio album And Justus for All , which consists of the best tracks from the very positively received mixtape And Justus for All (without DJ shouts) and new tracks from the group.

Following the same logic, after the success of And Justus for All (entry into the Billboard Top 200) in November 2008 , Litte Brother also released the mix tape Separate but Equal as a regular album, with the addition of Drama Free Edition . The album is free of mixtape elements like shout outs and scratching etc. In addition, some new tracks are included.

As a parting gift for their fans, Little Brother recorded the album Leftback , which was released in April 2010. At the same time, Little Brother announced their breakup, but Phonté and rapper Big Pooh are still active as solo artists.

In September 2018 Phonte, rapper Big Pooh and 9th Wonder performed together for the first time. In May 2019, Phonte and rapper Big Pooh announced that they would be working together again under Little Brother. Her new album May the Lord Watch was released in August 2019 .
