La Roux (pronounced Laruh ) is the pseudonym of the British singer-songwriter and music producer Eleanor "Elly" Jackson (born March 12, 1988 ).

history

La Roux was originally an electro-pop duo consisting of Eleanor Jackson, daughter of English actress Trudie Goodwin, and producer Ben Langmaid. He had previously worked with bands like Faithless . Langmaid brought his relationships and musical experience to the work on the album La Roux (2009) and its production. Jackson wrote the compositions and wrote all the lyrics. As a duo, they became Grammy Award winners. With the single In for the Kill they achieved their first successes, with Bulletproof the international breakthrough came. The single even reached number 1 in the UK .

The band name, which contradicts French grammar (“the redhead” actually means la rousse in French ), relates, as Jackson explained, to their red hair and their rather androgynous , boyish appearance. On the French-Canadian TV show "Tout le monde en parle" Elly explains that she found La Roux in a book about baby names. She explained the grammatical error nonchalantly : "It was an English book!"

Elly Jackson did not cope with the great commercial success mentally, she suffered from loss of voice and panic attacks at times . Langmaid, who had already been her duo partner in the folky predecessor project Automan , no longer wanted to be her companion. The record company wanted to continue earning on the successful La Roux project and bridged the drought with secondary material for sidetracked and a new edition as La Roux (Gold Edition) .

The album Trouble in Paradise (2014) is Eleanor Jackson's second solo album as La Roux , on which she also worked as a music producer - five years after the first album, which sold two million times. According to Rolling Stone, the nine songs bring back memories of The Human League and Yazoo , of Tom Tom Club and Tears for Fears . The 1980s retromania is looser this time and also enriched with "some funky elements". Jackson and her co-producer Ian Sherwin have succeeded in creating a "neo-romantic" album that is all about sex and love.

Musical style

The sound of La Roux is primarily shaped by the British synth-pop bands of the early to mid- 1980s such as Depeche Mode , Erasure , The Human League , Yazoo and the Eurythmics . Jackson's androgynous appearance can also be associated with the latter . However, the album La Roux is also musically close to current electronic music such as that of Zoot Woman and Robyn .
