Each game published in the series depicts the sport of basketball, especially the National Basketball Association (NBA), and is developed from one edition to the next and new features are added. The series was originally distributed by Sega Sports before 2K Sports secured the rights to the brand in 2004. So far, 18 main parts of the series have appeared as well as other offshoots . Further titles were the NBA 2K series of e-sports used -Events and leagues and regularly receives positive reviews and good sales.

Game mechanics

Each edition of the NBA-2K series tries to recreate the North American professional basketball league NBA as realistically as possible. The game simulates a typical basketball game, whereby the entire team or a specific player can be controlled. This includes realistic rules of the game and a presentation comparable to a television broadcast. During the different editions there were a variety of game modes with various setting options. Each game includes the original teams and players from the current NBA season. In addition, historical NBA franchises and players and teams from the EuroLeague are included in the titles. You can also create your own teams and players.

One of the most important game modes is the career mode, which is described as a sporting role-playing game . The first game in the series with this mode was ESPN NBA Basketball (2003), but it was not until NBA 2K10 (2009) that it became a central part of the series. Originally the mode had the name “24/7”, meanwhile also “MyPlayer” and in current titles “MyCareer”. It simulates the basketball career of the self-made player who develops further during the seasons. It shows key career events, from high school and college , the NBA draft , possible title wins and the farewell game at the end of the career. Meanwhile, the player's attributes can be improved and off-field activities can be undertaken.

Another central game mode in the series allows you to take control of an NBA franchise and act as general manager . The mode is called "Association" in many NBA-2K games. In more recent iterations it can be found in the game modes "MyGM" and "MyLeague". It is possible to have full control over a team instead of just playing the actual games. During the season, the wishes and needs of the employees, players and the owner must be catered for.

The "MyTeam" mode, which appeared for the first time in NBA 2K13 (2012), focuses on building your own team, which you can use to play against other players online in multiplayer mode. The most important way to get players for your own team are so-called card packages, similar to trading cards . Inside the card packs purchased are random items such as player cards, temporary buffs, jerseys, logos, arenas and balls that can be used with your own team. Another game mode is "Pro-Am", in which a team is put together from self-created players.

In addition to regular NBA games, streetball is featured in many of the series' titles. Real and self-created players can be used in different streetball modes, as can well-known players. In more recent titles the modes are called “Blacktop” and “MyPark”. "Blacktop" is very similar to real streetball. “MyPark” consists of an open field with several places in which other online players can participate in different games. Some games in the series allow a slam dunk contest to be held .

Other game modes were exclusive to the respective title. NBA 2K11 (2010) includes the "Jordan Challenge", in which highlights from Michael Jordan's career are re-enacted, such as scoring 69 points within a game. NBA 2K12 (2011) has the "NBA's Greatest" mode, in which former NBA players such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar , Julius Erving and Bill Russell can be controlled. The PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows versions of NBA 2K14 (2013) include the "Path to Greatness" mode; Similar to the "Jordan Challenge", this mode is about LeBron James ' career.
