App attended the grand ducal drawing school in Darmstadt's residential palace in 1818 . On July 10, 1819, he enrolled in painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Then he switched to the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where Peter Cornelius was his teacher. He commissioned him and Wilhelm Röckel to design cardboard boxes in preparation for frescoes in Eller Castle near Düsseldorf . However, the frescoes were never executed. From 1828 App lived in Rome and belonged to that group of " German Romans " who were enthusiastic about Nazarene ideals. At that time App created religious pictures in the style of this art movement, later also profane history pictures. Darmstadt artists whom he met there at the time were Jakob Felsing and August Lucas .

In 1832 App returned to Darmstadt. In 1841 he presented his historical painting Hermann there, returning to his own as the winner . The proceeds from the exhibition were intended for the construction of the Hermann monument. In 1843 Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse-Darmstadt appointed him court painter. This was followed by portraits from the grand ducal family and civil society.
