Georg Jakob Felsing (born July 22, 1802 in Darmstadt , † June 9, 1883 in Darmstadt) was an engraver and copperplate printer.

Life

Felsing was the son of the engraver and printer Johann Conrad Felsing and brother of Johann Heinrich Felsing , who also embarked on this career. First he went to his father to apprenticeship, after his death in 1819 with the Darmstadt architect Georg Moller . Moller arranged a grant of 500 guilders for him from the sovereign Ludwig I of Hesse . Ludwig I had already promoted Felsing's father as Hereditary Prince. In 1822 he went to the Academy of Arts ( Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera ) in Milan , where an excellent copper engraving school was flourishing under Giuseppe Longhi . There he met Ernst Fries and Johann Heinrich von Dannecker .

In 1823 he won a silver medal from the academy for the portrayal of the colossal head by Lucius Verus , whereupon his sovereign extended his scholarship. Numerous trips took him through northern Italy. In 1828 he received the gold medal of the academy for the copper engraving Gesú all'Orto after Carlo Dolci . In 1829 he traveled to Rome and Naples, where he stayed for a year. Then he went back to Florence, where the academy appointed him “professore di prima classa”.

In 1832 he returned to Darmstadt, where he got a job as a court copper engraver. In 1836 he married a friend of his sister's. In the following years he made numerous trips. In 1854 he was also given the title of professor in Darmstadt. The Académie des Beaux-Arts accepted him as a foreign member . He engraved numerous works of the Düsseldorf School of Painting in copper. In 1866 his wife Auguste died. In addition to the realization that the profession of reproduction engraver was experiencing declining artistic appreciation and was slowly being superseded by photography , this made him resign professionally and artistically. Therefore, in 1876, he resigned the chairmanship of the Darmstädter Kunstverein , which he had held for forty years.
