Johann Heinrich Felsing (born September 18, 1800 in Darmstadt ; † March 29, 1875 there ) was a copper printer and engraver.

Life

Heinrich Felsing was the son of Johann Conrad Felsing and brother of Jakob Felsing . During their time at high school together, he made friends with Justus Liebig , which attracted him to study natural sciences, but his father's will determined him to train as a copper printer and engraver. He received his first training in Darmstadt from the architect Georg Moller .

In 1817 he joined the gymnastics company that was then newly founded in Darmstadt, today's Darmstädter TSG , which he later chaired twice for several years as "gymnastics warden".

After his father's death in 1819, he wanted to continue the business and went to Paris for technical training . His own doubts about his artistic talent encouraged him to turn away from art and devote himself to the perfection of printing technology. He used his friendship with Liebig to get advice from him on the qualities and technical properties of printing inks and papers. He established successful business connections with the large art dealers in Germany and the business began to flourish. Numerous well-known artists commissioned his company to print their engravings. The printing company taken over by the father developed into an art and industrial establishment recognized in Germany as well as in Italy and France. Due to the competition of photography , especially for portrait engravings , he got to know the process of galvanoplastic reproduction , which he introduced in his company. In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament .

His sons Otto and Friedrich set up copperplate printers in Berlin and Munich.

Felsing also made great contributions to the expansion of gymnastics in Hesse and was the creator of the so-called gymnast's cross .

Heinrich Felsing was buried in Darmstadt's Alter Friedhof (Darmstadt) (grave site: IH 23).
