Life

Tony, real Antoine, Johannot, engraver and painter, was the brother of Charles and Alfred Johannot . He first helped his brother Alfred with the production of coppers and vignettes for Walter Scott , James Fenimore Cooper and Lord Byron and provided illustrations for Molière and Don Quichotte as well as for Rousseau's Julie or Die neue Heloise and Goethe's Werther . In 1831 he also appeared as a painter with romantic genre paintings in the manner of his brother Alfred. In 1834 he painted a large picture for the Duke of Orléans , the death of the Connectables Duguesclin .

On behalf of the king, he painted large depictions of the battles at Rosbecque and Fontenay , the storming of the Méandre pass and Queen Victoria’s visit to Eu for the historical museum in Versailles .

However, he has a greater reputation as a draftsman and engraver, providing countless etchings, copper engravings and woodcuts for magnificent editions. He was especially important as a romantic book illustrator. He created illustrations for around 150 books.
