Agona Swedru is a place in the Central Region in the West African state of Ghana and is located in the south of the country.

In the country's last census on March 26, 2000, the city had 45,614 residents. Projections for January 1, 2007 estimate the population to be 52,161. In the 1984 census, 31,226 inhabitants were listed. The city is currently number 25 on the list of the largest cities in Ghana.

The city is about two hours by car from the capital, Accra . About 45 minutes from Agona Swedru is Winneba , a historic coastal town of about 45,000 people. To get to the surrounding cities, the so-called Trotros , purpose-built and densely seated minibuses and delivery vans, as well as the larger metro buses, operate. The largest stop for Tro Tros, the Central Station, is centrally located on the Mandela Market. There are also several Tro Tros that go to more distant cities such as Koforidua , Cape Coast and Takoradi . There are usually no bus schedules and bus times, the minibuses leave when all seats are sold. Therefore, you should plan a little more time for longer trips.

In Agona Swedru there are various shops that offer almost everything. Local food and all kinds of fruit are particularly common in small stalls, most of which are located on the side of the street. Two dealers specialize in the bikes popular in the hilly area. In Agona Swedru there are also countless restaurants that offer something from Ghanaian cuisine to western dishes.

Swedru Sport Stadium

The Swedru Sport Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Agona Swedru. The stadium offers space for around 5,000 people and is mainly used for football matches. Football tournaments between schools in the area are particularly frequent. Occasionally, well-known Ghanaian artists perform at the stadium. Every year on March 6th, the Independence Day of Ghana, there is a big celebration in the stadium. On this day, the chiefs of the region come to the stadium to watch the schools' annual marching competition.

Mandela market

The Mandela Market is located in the center of Agona Swedru. Every Monday and Thursday there is market day, during these two days of the week many traders from the surrounding villages come to Agona Swedru to sell their products at the market. Typical goods include fabrics, jewelry, shoes and local foods such as yam and plantains. On the other days of the week the market is also open, but significantly fewer stalls are open. The market is only almost completely closed on Sunday mornings, as the majority of the residents go to one of the many churches in Agona Swedru. The Mandela Market is one of the largest markets in Ghana and the workplace of many residents.

Culture and leisure

Since the city mainly serves as a market and less as a culture city, there are relatively few leisure activities in Agona Swedru.

At the beginning of the city, in the direction of the coastal town of Winneba , you will find the public parks and gardens. The park is open Monday to Friday during the week and is closed to visitors on weekends. There are also some pools in the city where the young people often meet on weekends. Not far from Swedru is the small town of Oda. There you can visit the largest tree in Ghana, the " Big Tree ".

Every two years a large festival takes place in Agona Swedru, which is called the "Akwambo Festival". The duration of the festival is about a week. The last festival started on August 10, 2018 and ended on August 18, 2018. During this time, the culture of the region is celebrated with music and dance performances.
