Giuseppe Longhi (born October 13, 1766 in Monza , † January 2, 1831 in Milan ) was an Italian engraver .

Life

He attended the school of the Florentine Vincenzo Vangelisti (1728–1798) in Milan, where he also devoted himself to painting. He later went to Rome , where he joined Raffaello Morghen (1758–1833), and was first known for his engraving of Bonaparte's portrait after the painting by Gros . In 1798 he became a professor at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. In 1823 Longhi was accepted as a foreign member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .

Books

Giuseppe Longhi wrote La Calcografia, a theory of copper engraving (Milan 1830). A German translation by Carl Barth in two volumes was published in Hildburghausen in 1837 under the title Die Kupferstecherei .
